Brian Boyle, Donegal County Council along with Jose Manuel San Emeterio Perez, ERNACT, Eunan Quinn, Donegal County and Daragh McDonagh, Donegal County Council welcoming visitors from northern Europe to Donegal as part of the EU Northern Periphery & Arctic Programme funded IMPROVE project.
Representatives from northern European countries visited Donegal last week for the first meeting of the IMPROVE project.
The IMPROVE project is a €1.4m Living Lab project aimed at increasing innovation in the delivery of public services in each of the regions taking part in the project.
The project is being lead by Letterkenny based ERNACT and the project partners include Donegal County Council, Derry City and Strabane District Council and local authorities and public bodies from Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway. Letterkenny Institute of Technology is an associate partner.
Brian Boyle Head of Information Systems with Donegal County Council said that hosting the inaugural meeting of this group in Donegal was a great opportunity for the county.
“We are delighted to have had the opportunity to host the first meeting of this group in Donegal. The IMPROVE project which is funded under the EU Northern Periphery & Arctic Programme is an important project for us and it will be instrumental in supporting the roll out of the Donegal Digital Action Plan which is currently being finalised”.
He added “Donegal is similar in many ways to the regions in northern Europe that we will be working with. Many of these regions are primarily rural with a large portion of their populations living in remote rural areas. This project will give us an opportunity to learn from their experiences but will also allow us to highlight the range of innovative projects taking place in Donegal and the north west region such as the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how this can be used to facilitate greater engagement with the citizen. ”
The first meeting of the group took place in the Co-Lab at Letterkenny Institute of Technology and it is expected that this group will return in 2016 to participate in the Transnational Open Data Conference which will be hosted by ERNACT and Donegal County Council.
